Lions Club of Imphal (Club No. 26101) under District 322D was chartered on 22nd June 1968 and is the oldest Club in Manipur. Since its inception, Lions Club of Imphal has been working on the focused projects especially Vision. This effort gain momentum in late 1980s and early 1990s leading to adoption of Eye Screening as a Permanent Project of Lions Club of Imphal in 1995. Over the years, the Club through vision project had conducted many eye screening activities, both as stand-alone project or a part of Multi-Disciplinary Health Camps at various rural areas of Manipur. From 1985 onwards (even before adoption as Permanent Project), the Club had facilitated cataract operations and distribution of Spectacles with assistance from Health Department, Government of Manipur. In the year 1985, the foundation stone of the Lions Health Centre was laid by the Hon’ble CM, Manipur. A Lions Eye Hospital was planned in the premises and construction commenced in 2008. On 4th May, 2012, The Lions Eye Hospital was inaugurated by the Hon’ble Governor, Manipur. Funding was through generous donations by members of the Club, Fund Raising Projects, MP Local Area Development Fund and grant from District Fund Foundation of District 322D. So far, this is the only Lions Eye Hospital in the State of Manipur. With financial assistance from members, generous persons and Manipur State Blindness Control Society, the Hospital had purchased equipment like Indigenous (1) One Operating Microscope Floor stand with light source & fine focusing motor with shin-nippon operating microscope head, (2) One Tomey Auto Refractometer etc. The Eye Hospital is managed by a Trust with volunteer doctors and support technicians. Presently, the Hospital is conducting regular free eye-screening OPDs on 2nd and 4th Sunday of every month. From this screening, those patients who are in need of spectacles or cataract surgery are facilitated by the Hospital. As mentioned above, the Eye Hospital volunteers/ staff participate in all the Multi-Disciplinary Health Camps organized by Lions Club of Imphal. Annually the Eye Hospital checks about 400 patients, both in OPDs and as a part of Medical Camps. With support from members and other public spirited citizens including funding from State Authorities, the Lions Eye Hospital at Imphal, Manipur will continue to render humanitarian service to the public especially those underprivileged and under-serviced section of the community.
