A Brief History of Lions Club of Imphal

Lionism came to India in mid 1950s and the first Lions Club in India was opened in 1956 at Bombay (now Mumbai).  Slowly it spread to other parts of the country.

In 1968, two Lions leaders from Lions Club of Shillong came to Imphal with an agenda of opening a new Lions Club in Manipur. They could convince some prominent citizens and thus Lions Club of Imphal was officially inaugurated on 14th March, 1968 and on 22nd June 1968, the Club was formally chartered at the Conference Hall of Hotel Imphal (Old High Court) with the 30 Charter Members headed by Lion Mahender Singh as Charter President.

Over the years, the Club has been progressing and doing humanitarian services. Many prominent citizens of Manipur were brought into the fold of Lionism. Notable among them are (Late) RK Dorendra Singh, Former CM Manipur, (Late) E. Kunjeshwar Singh, IAS (Retd), Former Minister Manipur, (Late) Dr. P. Kumud Singh, Former Medical Director, (Late) M. Modhumangol Singh, successful businessman, (Late) L. Kulabidhu Singh, successful businessman, M. Ibohal Singh, Former Chief Engineer, (Late) Wangkhem Basanta Kumar Singh, Former Minister Manipur and many more.

At present the Club has its own Service Centre at Sangaiprou, Airport Road Road, Imphal. The Lions Eye Hospital, established in 2012 is also located in the Service Centre premises and regular vision check-up OPD service is held on 2nd and 4th Sunday of every month as “Permanent Project”.

In the field of service, the Lions Club of Imphal is not lacking behind. The following are the “Permanent Projects” of the Club:

  • Permanent Service Centre cum Eye Hospital
  • Three Tube Wells at (i) Langol, Sangaiprou & Kanglatongbi
  • Blood Donation & Awareness Campaign on Patriots’ Day (13th August)
  • All Manipur Senior School Students Debating Competition on UN Day (24th October)
  • All 5 focused projects by the Lions Clubs International
  • Mega Health Camp in Rural Areas
  • Honouring Past Presidents & Past District Governors

The Club has received Club Excellence Award in 2020 and 2022 respectively.
